Brief Summary:
- Mary Lennox is a daughter of a rich british couple who live in India.
- As cholera breaks out she becomes an orphan and is sent away.
- She is sent away to an isolated country manor, in England which is owned by her father's brother in law, Archibald Craven.
- He is always traveling around so the only person who has time for her is the chambermaid Martha.
- Martha tells mary a story about the secret garden, which has been locked since the death of Mrs Craven, by her grieving husband who then buried the key .- as the robin drew Mary's attention to the key which was hidden under a piece of ivy.
- When she enters the garden she notices that some of the plants were dead and some had survived, and she decides
that this will be her own secret.
- It was no longer a personal secret when Mary asked Dickon, Martha's brother who was familiar with plants.
- One night Mary hears noises and was willing to search where the noise was comming from, she then finds a young boy named Colin, Mr Craven's son who had never learnt to walk.This is because phycological reasons as his dad suffers hunchback and believes Colin might get it aswell.
- Colin always chucked tantrum's and his father didn't like to see his face as it reminded him of his mother who died ten years ago.
- Colin becomes jealous of mary as she is spending her time outside with Martha's brother rather then inside with him.
- That night Colin goes crazy and has a hysterical fit, this came through his fear of dying early.
- To calm him down Mary does what Colin request and takes him outside for a walk through the secret garden, as the garden becomes alive again, so does Colin.
- To keep the garden as a secret Colin makes sure everyone stays away from the path of the secret garden.
- The old gardener discovers what the children are up to and finds them in the secret garden were he used to visit every year as he was one of Mrs Craven's favourite.
- As angry as the gardener was seeing the improvement in colin and the garden changed his opinion.
- As colin is getting better and better he orders the gardener not to open his mouth, as they want it as a suprise.
- Mr Craven has been travelling europe but after having a dream about his wife and recieving a note all about the secret he decides to come back home.
- As he arrives he is drawn towards the secret garden where he can hear children, he see's the three kids racing but not only Colin was winning !
- They explain everything to Mr Craven and everyone are astonished to see two miracles, Colin running and Mr Craven happy again.
